Causes of Lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can be fatal, though with recent medical advances, fatalities are becoming increasingly rare. As with other autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks the body’s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, but most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and nervous system.

Lupus (pronounced: loo-pus) is a disease that involves the immune system and affects about 1.5 million Americans; nearly 90% of those diagnosed with the disease are female. Normally, a person’s immune system works by producing immunity cells and antibodies, special substances that fight germs and infectionIf you have lupus, your immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues by mistake. This can damage your joints, skin, blood vessels and organs. There are many kinds of lupus. The most common type, systemic lupus erythematosus, affects many parts of the body

What causes lupus

Environment (Sunlight, stress, certain medications, and viruses might trigger symptoms in people who are prone to getting lupus.)

Hormones (Lupus is more common in women during childbearing years.)

Sunlight. Exposure to the sun may bring on lupus skin lesions or trigger an internal response in susceptible people. Exactly why ultraviolet radiation has this effect isn’t well understood, but scientists suspect that sunlight may cause skin cells to express certain proteins on their surface.Although the causes of lupus are not completely understood, the disease is believed to result from an interplay of genetic, environmental (such as ultraviolet light, stress, infections, certain drugs and chemicals) and hormonal factors.Studies have shown that women are more likely to experience autoimmune disorders, such as SLE than men, which may help to explain the higher prevalence of lupus in women.

Symptoms of Lupus

SLE symptoms may develop slowly over months or years, or they may appear suddenly. Symptoms tend to be worse during winter months, perhaps because prolonged exposure to sunlight in the summer causes a gradual build-up of factors that trigger symptoms months later.

Each person with lupus has slightly different symptoms that can range from mild to severe and may come and go over time. However, some of the most common symptoms of lupus include painful or swollen joints (arthritis), unexplained fever, and extreme fatigue. A characteristic red skin rash (the so-called butterfly or malar rash) may appear across the nose and cheeks. Affecting what the Lupus Foundation of America estimates is 500,000 to 1.5 million Americans, lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys

Treatment of Lupus

The use of ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and medications like ibuprofen in treating lupus requires some caution. Ibuprofen and similar drugs can harm kidney function, especially in people who already have kidney problems. In addition, ibuprofen and related agents can rarely cause inflammation of the lining of the brain resulting in a severe headache.

Antimalarial drugs. Although there’s no known relationship between lupus and malaria, these medications have proved useful in treating signs and symptoms of lupus. Antimalarials may also prevent flares of the disease. Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) is the most commonly prescribed antimalarial. Side effects of antimalarial drugs include vision problems and muscle weakness.Lifestyle adjustments, such as getting plenty of rest, reducing stress, eating a balanced diet and quitting smoking

Avoiding excessive sun exposure or regularly applying sunscreens in order to reduce rashes and flares in lupus

What is an Enema?

April 6th, 2011
JP Richardson asked:

An enema is a procedure in which liquids are introduced into the colon and rectum through the anus. They are used for various reasons such as the treatment of constipation, alternative health therapies, and a remedy for encopresis.

When enemas are used as a bowel stimulant, the patient holds the liquid in and then expels it along with feces into a toilet or bedpan. Enemas used in this fashion are similar to laxatives.

Enemas are also used to administer substances such as antiemetics, cancer medicines, arthritis medications, and more when it is difficult or impossible to deliver them orally. Enemas can also be used to deliver relief for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and even as a hydration technique.

If you would like an enema but are embarrassed or concerned with privacy, you can purchase many pre-packaged home enema kits to do the job for you in the comfort of your own home. They are single use kits which can be disposed of after use. Another option is to purchase a combination enema syringe, which is a gentler enema.

In alternative medicine applications, enemas are typically called “colon hydrotherapy” treatments or “colonix irrigation” procedures. When used in this capacity, enemas aim to clear the accumulation of fecal matter in the large intestines.

The FDA has determined that colonic irrigation equipment isn’t permitted to be sold for the purpose of general well-being and must be prescribed by a doctor.

If you are considering an enema, it is recommended that you research the different options available before choosing the best one for you and your situation.

Know the Facts about Teenage Pregnancy

April 6th, 2011
Milly asked:

Sexual intercourse is the main reason behind any pregnancy. Most of the researchers did research to figure out the reason of widespread teenage pregnancy.

Raging hormones and a newfound sense of independence may induce teens to act in ways that are irresponsible. The worst repercussion of this could be a teenage pregnancy.

The reasons for teenage pregnancy may be several. Social scientists are of the opinion that teenage pregnancy is due to lack of sex education. Many teenaged girls do not know anything about birth control methods. Worse still, some of them believe that certain methods such as douching with Coke or Pepsi after having sex will prevent them from getting pregnant. These are, however, just myths.

But the teen pregnancy problem is not exclusive to third world countries only. Developed countries have also been experiencing a rise in unwanted teen pregnancy. In such countries, educational opportunities are abundant. So why did teen pregnancy still happen?

A teenage mother can also place a baby in the care of foster parents for a particular period of time till she is ready to take responsibility for the baby. Being a single parent is now no longer a social taboo and the government offers plenty of aid to single parents, which is why more and more teenage mothers are opting to be single parents.

With teenage pregnancy on the rise, it is imperative for parents of teenagers to sit down and talk to them about sex and the consequences of unprotected sex. Teens will have sex so make sure you really talk to them about what could happen if they engage in unprotected sex. Stop the cycle before it even begins.

The best thing to do in regards to teenage pregnancy diet plans is to talk to a nutritionist about the specific diet plan that would be right. This can help to ensure that you get the exact nutrition that is right for the situation. When in doubt, it is always best to play it safe. Nutritionists specialize in making sure that certain people get the right types of food for their conditions.

Suction curettage can be done up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. Under the care of a qualified health care professional the contents of the uterus is removed by a suction device that is inserted into the uterus. After 12 weeks of pregnancy this procedure may be called a “dilation and evacuation.”

Being a teenager is a troubling time. While adjusting to all the changes going on both in your biology and your responsibilities, making the right decisions can be hard when it comes to topics such as relationships.

Pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates among teenagers in the United States have turn down over the past decade but at a standstill remain a widespread public health issue.

Pregnant women should avoid undercooked meats because of their risk to be infested with harmful bacteria such as salmonella.

Set a clear basis on the values that you have towards sex and also the attitudes that you carry regarding your expectations of your child’s sexual preferences. It is important that you are open and you clearly state what you believe your child should and should not do.
